The Scottish Canals-led partnership project has seen the transformation and extension of a historic, disused building, known locally as ‘The Egg Shed’ into a bespoke interpretation and heritage centre telling the story of the Crinan Canal and the communities on its banks. The new hub will also act as a community space, exploring the natural and built heritage of the area.

The rejuvenation of the historic waterside building at Ardrisahig Harbour marks another milestone in the continued investment and regeneration of the gateway to the Crinan Canal. Four-by-Two were appointed to create the overall branding, interpretation and retail offer for the harbour and newly appointed heritage hub.

Taking inspiration from the local environment and the building’s history, Four-by-two have created a light and airy interior that binds effortlessly to the minimal and contemporary structure designed by Oliver Chapman Associates. The exterior of the building acting as an exoskeleton to the shifting weather conditions that prevail at this stunningly exposed location. Stepping inside, the choice of materials and finishes create a warm and welcoming environment. The retail modules have been designed to be moveable and flexible in configuration. This approach allows maximum flexibility to transform the space and develop the interpretation offer over time. As part of our project at Ardrishaig, we were appointed to create a fun centrepiece, a giant egg that allows you to step inside the stories of the local area. The interior of the egg acts as a booth where you can immerse yourself aurally and visually in the tales of Mid-Argyll’s past.

OUR VISION WITHIN THE EGG SHED IS TO CONNECT PEOPLE WITH THE COAST AND SEA THROUGH MEANINGFUL STORYTELLING. MESSAGING UNDERPINNED BY THE STRONG BOND OF COMMUNITIES WORKING TOGETHER, REMEMBERING AND VALUING THEM.
