A leader in eco-friendly hospitality
Desa Potato Head, located in Seminyak, Bali, is a cultural hub that seamlessly blends design, art, sustainability, and community. Comprising Potato Head Studios, Katamama, and the Beach Club, it serves as a bold example of how eco-consciousness can be incorporated into luxury hospitality. Founded by Ronald Akili, the space challenges traditional commercial models by embedding sustainability into both its design and operations, creating a destination that is as much about environmental responsibility as it is about indulgence.
At the heart of Potato Head’s philosophy is the concept of “waste-as-beauty,” an approach that reimagines discarded materials as valuable resources. Collaborating with architect Andra Matin, the resort uses local materials
and cultural references to create minimalist designs that echo the natural beauty of Bali.
The Beach Club, a stunning design by Andra Matin, illustrates Potato Head’s dedication to sustainability. The structure, inspired by the Colosseum, is crafted from repurposed teakwood shutters sourced from across Indonesia. This architectural marvel not only speaks to the resort’s sustainable design ethos but also serves as a testament to the cultural preservation of the region.

Art plays a significant role in Potato Head’s sustainability efforts, with installations that spark dialogue around the global challenges of waste and pollution. Artist Liina Klauss created a striking installation using over 5,000 plastic flipflops collected from Bali’s beaches. The colourful piece, designed to resemble a wave, drew attention to the critica issue of marine pollution. In 2021, the installation was reimagined to further explore the potential of waste as a medium for positive change, reinforcing Potato Head’s commitment to both art and activism.

Beyond art, Potato Head has ventured into the world of product design through its “Wasted” brand, which transforms waste into functional, beautiful items. Collaborating with designer Max Lamb, Potato Head repurposes plastics, linens, and glass into striking objects. With 99.5% of its waste recycled, Potato Head sets an impressive benchmark for a zero-waste future in the hospitality industry, demonstrating how the circular economy can be applied on a large scale.
Potato Head’s sustainability journey has transformed it into a leader in eco-friendly hospitality, with a commitment to zero-waste practices, carbon neutrality, and the use of sustainable materials. Since 2016, the resort has drastically reduced landfill waste and incorporated recycled materials, embodying regenerative tourism principles. Through its innovative design, art installations, and waste-reduction efforts, Desa Potato Head sets a new standard for luxury that aligns with environmental responsibility. By blending design, culture, and sustainability, the resort not only leads by example but also inspires others in the hospitality industry to adopt circular, eco-conscious practices.
